Following A Diabetes Diet Plan

When you are suffering from diabetes, it’s important to follow a diabetes diet plan. Without it, your condition can worsen, causing a large number of undesirable consequences. Managing diabetes with proper nutrition is considered to be the best way to keep the ailment at bay. The ideal way to do so is by creating a variable, but healthy eating plan. You should get a qualified nutritionist to help you with creating it, which would allow you to vary the food items in your diet, instead of replacing the nutritional values.

The typical diet plan for a diabtic must include 50% starch, 30% protein and 20% fat. The diabetic food pyramid recommends a certain measurement level and because of this, preparing diabetic food must be done according to exact and standard measurements, such as 1 cup, 1 tablespoon and 1 teaspoon.

Baked, broiled, steamed and boiled foods are ideal in a diabetic person’s diet, and fried foods must be avoided at all time. No snacks are allowed between meals and meals must never be missed, because it can put your metabolic system into turmoil if you do. So, this means that when you are eating out, you order only fat-free and low caloric dishes.

On your diabetes diet plan, you will have to avoid a lot of foods like whole milk products, frozen and preserved fruits, honey, candy, sweets, confectionery items, your favorite desserts – instead, you must stick to healthy alternatives, like fresh fruits and vegetables and skimmed milk for your diary intake.

There are plenty of other things you will have to try your very best to avoid – alcohol tops the list. Other high-fat foods like red meat, potato chips, eggs, mayonnaise etc must also be avoided, if you can, as should bottled fruit juice, cooking sauces and carbonated drinks. When you are on a strict diabetic eating plan, the daily calorie intake you must aim at is 1800 calories. So you have to make sure that your daily diet is carefully planned well in advance.

The simplest and most nutritious diabetes diet plan for a single day can include a breakfast containing 2/3 cup of apple juice, cup of oatmeal, 1 slice of wholemeal bread toast, 1 soft cooked egg and 1 cup unsweetened skimmed milk. Lunch can be cup of tuna, 2 slices of wholemeal bread, cup diced tomatoes, 1 cup mixed fruit, 1 tsp margarine and 1 glass lemon tea. The ideal dinner meal would be 3 ounces of baked chicken, cup of mashed potatoes, 1 slice of wholemeal bread, 1 cup broccoli or tossed salad. Try not to use store-bought salad dressing. Instead, use a 1tsp of olive oil mixed with some vinegar mixed in chopped garlic and parsley/basil/sage or oregano to add flavor.

You need to know a good bit about what your body needs in terms of nutrition and how your metabolic system keeps you going to figure out a diabetes diet plan. You can turn to your doctor for help, and you can design a varied and nutritious eating plan that keeps you healthy and happy for a long time.

Herbal Solutions For Diabetes And Pre-Diabetes Conditions

Herbal remedies have been used in diabetes over the ages and can have practical applications for the modern era also.

There are a number of plant species known to have insulin-like acting substances. This article aims to tackle these various natural plant remedies for diabetes.

To understand all the plants and how they interact would of course require many years of study, and this summary is just a very, very brief overview.

Keep in mind that there can be interactions between herbs, medications, and other elements, and that the health, constitution and individual issues of each person is different. It is important, therefore, to seek the guidance of a medical practitioner, particularly one with knowledge of natural alternatives, before undertaking changes and taking medications or herbal substances.

Of the many herbal options, but a few are:

* European blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) Traditional herbal medicine has been emphasizing on the leaves of this plant species as having a natural sugar lowering action. Otherwise known as bilberry, you can take this herbal remedy by steeping 2 to 3 handfuls of leaves in four cups of hot water for one hour. You need to take 3 cups of the concoction every day. Latest research has also shown that the berries or their extract are even more beneficial.

* American ginseng (Panax ginseng) This contains saponins which displayed hypoglycemic effect and promoted insulin production in animal studies conducted in 1985. Another study showed that American ginseng was successful in preventing the elevation of type II diabetics’ blood sugar level.

* Bitter melon (Momordica charantia) The hypoglycemic action of this herb’s active ingredient charantin, is said to be more potent than that of Tolbutamide, a popular hypoglycemic drug. The American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy published a study done in 2003 demonstrating the hypoglycemic effect of this herb. This vegetable which is grown in the Philippines, India, Malaysia and Australia, can be sauteed, steamed, or served as a salad. Bitter melon’s fresh juice, tea, and dried herb are also effective in controlling blood sugar levels.

* Gymnema (Gymnema sylvestre) Endemic to India’s tropical forests, this herb is used to reduce glucose in the blood and to help repair pancreatic cell damage. The leaves are known to increase blood insulin levels. An extract preparation contains 300 mg of its active ingredient.

* Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) In both animal and human studies, fenugreek has shown to have anti-diabetic effects. According to some trials, this herb is beneficial to both types of diabetes. Other studies have also confirmed its lipid lowering action. Taking 15 g of powdered fenugreek seed that has been soaked in water caused a remarkable reduction in the levels of after-meal blood glucose. Complementary use of fenugreek seeds further lowers insulin resistance and enhances lowering of blood sugar in type II diabetics.

* Crepe myrtle (Lagerstroemia speciosa) Traditionally used as diabetes treatment in Asia. Although the results have been promising, more studies are still needed to establish its long term safety and efficacy.

* Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) Usually taken as herbal tea, this herb works to lower the blood levels of sugar, cholesterol and even triglycerides. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Holy Basil demonstrated a 17.6 % decrease in blood glucose. This enabled the researchers to conclude that this herb is a valuable herbal remedy for mild to moderate diabetes.

These are just some of the known herbs with blood sugar lowering effect. There are still several plant species which may effectively reduce blood glucose as well, including aloe vera, psillium, cinnamon, garlic, Asian ginseng and salt bush.

It is worthwhile considering the herbal options, in consultation with your medical advisor, particularly as many pharmaceutical prodcts can have potential adverse side effects. And these can be considered, in conjunction with suitable diet and excercise towards achieving improved sugar levels.

Home Remedies for Diabetes, Diabetes Information

Diabetes is a disease that develops, due to a problem with the hormone insulin, produced by the pancreas. Insulin, controls the glucose in the blood, and how much glucose is absorbed by the cells; which in turn use glucose to produce energy. When insulin is not present, or the body is not using it properly, glucose cannot enter the cells, and stays in the bloodstream producing hyperglycemia, or excess of sugar (glucose) in the blood.

Understanding The Problem Of Diabetes

Anyone who has the condition known as diabetes has a condition that creates a situation where the conversion of energy from the food they eat is faulty. We use glucose, which is transported around the body by blood, as a form of energy which comes from food containing sugar. As glucose is the fuel our body needs to survive it is imperative that it is able to be transported by the blood without any problems, something which diabetes stops. If this glucose remains in the blood and is not absorbed in to the body as it needs to, abnormally high levels of blood glucose or high blood sugar levels as it is also known as, occur.

Information in this article is regarding the two major types of the condition. In type 1, which is also called juvenile onset diabetes or insulin-dependent where the body completely stops producing any insulin; this can occur at any age but diabetics must take daily insulin injections in order to survive. The body uses insulin to ensure the glucose can be used by the body which in turn converts into energy. Adult onset or type 2 diabetes affects older people as the name suggests but differs from type one; this is caused when the insulin is either not being produced in sufficient quantities or there is a problem in its use, however a careful diet plan can usually treat the condition.

Those energy foods which we all need to live are pasta, rice, potatoes, bread and fruit of course. Many health conditions can be caused by long term high blood sugar levels including: poor vision, heart complaints, problems with the kidneys and in some cases even limb amputation. The importance of managing your diabetes condition cannot be underestimated and with a disciplined approached these serious conditions can be improved; then many of the conditions associated with this condition can be slowed down considerably if not stopped altogether. Care of your condition relies on you maintaining certain aspects and any prescribed medication must be taken routinely; giving up smoking, keep you blood glucose and cholesterol levels stable as well as well as other blood fats are just some of the aspects that require special attention.

Apart from this, your blood pressure and weight should not go above the limits your doctor advised. Diabetes is a life long condition if you are unlucky enough to contract it; in the United States there are reports of it affecting over two and a half percent of the population. The problem is that here are probably another 5.5 million people who have this condition but just don’t know it; around 600,000 US citizens contract this condition each year so you can see the problem is serious. It is a worrying fact that whilst 34,000 American citizens die each year as a direct result of diabetes, another 320,000 die that have the condition where it may be an underlying reason.

Fighting Food Cravings- a Life and Death Issue

My father has been on my mind a lot this week in conjunction with this blog. He passed away a week ago Monday, and so it has been a rough two weeks. In addition, his major ailment was diabetes; otherwise know as the food addiction disease.

In the days of my childhood my dad and I had a great time together, and our time always included goodies. Ice cream, donuts, and candy bars were among our favorites. We laughed and sang and ate in a fairy tale world where I had never even heard of food addiction or cravings.

In short my dad loved to eat and so did I. It was one of the many levels upon which we met. We were very connected and we loved each other a lot.

But as I watched my dad in the last years of his life, I remember thinking so frequently “What a price pleasure in food can exact.” As time went by my father could hardly walk due to his diabetes. He couldn’t see very well. Food began to have no flavor at all and he had a hard time swallowing. He spent his days dozing listlessly in a chair, and was sad beyond measure at the loss of all that he had ever enjoyed in life.

And one could arguably say that he starved himself to death in the final weeks of not even being able to eat.

So what does this say to us, the masses of us, as we go about our lives? The pat and easy answer would be “just don’t eat so many complex carbohydrates.” But with food cravings, and nearly every label on every food container in the grocery store having some sort of sugar or flour product listed in the ingredients- and usually high up- this seems nearly impossible. I know it took me nearly seven years of eating absolutely no trace of sugar, wheat or flour to feel that such things no longer had a draw for me. Oddly enough, this is about the same amount of time it takes for the body to regenerate all of its cells- and I have often pondered that perhaps I am now literally ‘a whole new me’ with mo more cells that are addicted to foods.

During the week of my dad’s death, I played in the arena of eating some no-no foods. In some ways I think it was a last and feeble attempt to connect with my dad, who was gone by then. But I can tell you that I don’t suggest this as a good idea. I have had my days of intense and unmanageable cravings, and it’s not fun. So I know that seven years or no seven years, it is best for me to stay on the straight and narrow.

So where does that leave us, as masses of us still experience cravings that seem almost debilitating and as we step closer and closer to a slow, dehumanizing decline like the one my dad experienced. The first step is to learn about food addiction and how it operates, one person at a time. And we hope that the more people that learn about it, the more we will be able to find healthy, tasty, and non-addicting foods in the grocery store. Right now, it seems to be a bit of an uphill climb to find and eat non-addicting foods. But today I feel healthy, and vibrant, and fully alive- which is more than I can say for all of the years when I ate all that stuff. And I honor my dad’s love by not going down the road that he did. And my father was an amazingly loving man, so I am sure he would have wanted that for me.
