Treating diabetes with surgery
Diabetes develops when the body is not able to produce insulin the right way. Hence, there may be too little insulin in the body to regulate the blood sugar level or if the insulin is in the body, it might not have been used effectively thereby leading to diabetes. These two cases fall under two types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes may occur when there is no or too little insulin in the body that is the first case and type 2 diabetes may occur when the insulin of the body is not used effectively as in second case. Diabetes is taking the shape of grave disease with change in time. Near about to seven percentage of population in United States currently suffers from the disease. Most of these cases lie under type 2 diabetes.
Oftentimes, insulin injection or other prescribed drugs are brought in use to control the blood sugar level and hence diabetes. But, to the maximum, diet and exercise play a vital role in lowering down the fat, the sugar level and controlling diabetes. Proper and balanced diet and regular exercise are also responsible to bring down the effects of diabetes.
Now-a-days, diabetes patients are also treated with weight loss surgeries. It is believed that weight loss surgery is another tool to reduce the chances of diabetes. Weight-loss surgery is helpful in reducing type 2 diabetes specially which is much more prevalent than its similitude’s. Patients who undergo weight loss surgery are 5 times more likely to repel diabetes within next two years as compared to others who undergo the normal medication. This method includes weight-loss surgeries and a medical weight-management program. Weight loss surgeries are of two types: gastric-bypass and the lap-band. Earlier, some of the surgeons believed that the new lap-band method will not prove to be as effective as gastric-bypass surgery for treating diabetes. The surgeons thought that the lap-band surgery would not bring the same changes as gastric-bypass surgery because there were some hormonal changes that went on while the stomach was being stapled in the lap-bad surgery.
But gradually, within short span of time, the lap-band surgery also emerged as a successful mode of treatment of diabetes like the gastric-bypass surgery. The difference between the two modes of treatment is that in the lap-band surgery, the upper area of the patient’s stomach is tied with a band of silicone while in the gastric-bypass surgery, the upper and lower parts of the stomach are equally divided, thereby making the stomach smaller. Gastric bypass surgery helps to reduce weight by absorbing lesser calories of food as the food is allowed to bypass the small intestine in this treatment.
Almost 84 percent of the Type 2 diabetes patients in United States are given the gastric-bypass surgery treatment. The ratio of the death-rate of the patients undergoing Gastric-bypass surgery is 1 in 200 while the ratio of the death-rate of the patients undergoing Gastric-bypass surgery is 1 in 2000. Lap-band surgery has less side-effects in comparison to the Gastric-bypass surgery and is more safer than the Gastric-bypass surgery as the gall bladder is completely removed from the body in case of gastric-band surgery.
Normally, diabetics prefer to go for Insulin shots and other oral medications. It is not obvious that a well-balanced diet and exercising will bring the required results. The lap-band surgery eliminates the need of Insulin shots, oral medications, exercising and dieting. Obese people, having mass index above 40, people with high fat and cholesterol, hypertension and Type II diabetes, can respond fast to lap-band surgery rather than other modes of treatment. Reducing weight helps diabetics control the disease more effectively. All the above mentioned methods of treatment are beneficial to almost 76% of type 2 diabetes patients.
But sill, research is going on to find out the reasons why obesity is the leading cause of diabetes. And why weight loss can help in controlling diabetes? Excess fat in human body degenerates the insulin’s reaction. But research is going on to verify the role of fatty acids in the blood as well as hormones released by fat that regulate insulin.
